">Sky Sports cameras talking to a group of reporters, Allardyce commented, "On reflection it was a silly thing to do, but just to let everyone know, I helped out somebody I'd know for 30 years and unfortunately it was an error in judgement on my behalf and I've paid the consequences."

The 61-year-old had been filmed by undercover reporters posing as businessman as part of a larger scale Daily Telegraph investigation on corruption in football.

During two meetings last a total of four hours he agreed a £400,000 speaking deal, offered advice and contacts to help bypass transfer rules against third party ownership and criticised the FA and England predecessor Roy Hodgson.

"Entrapment has won on this occasions and I have to accept that," a clearly disappointed Allardyce continued.

"The agreement (to leave) was done very amicably with the FA. I apologise to those and all concerned in those unfortunate situations I've put myself in.

"I have a confidentiality agreement and I took the time to talk to you on this matter. I can't answer any more questions just now, I'm going to go way and reflect on it."

On what the immediate future holds for him, the former Bolton, West Ham and Sunderland boss is temporarily leaving the country to reflect on the storm of the last 24 hours.

"I'm off abroad, just to chill out and reflect, and I'd like to offer the England lads, Gareth (Southgate) and the staff all the very best," he said.

On whether his 67 day reign as England boss was his last job in football, he could only say, "Who knows, we'll wait and see," as he departed the scene.
