San Jose Earthquakes sign defender Jonathan Mensah

Black Stars defender Jonathan Mensah has joined Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes.

The Quakes have agreed on a deal for the 32-year-old, who only had a year left on his contract with Crew. In 2020, he was one of two non-goalkeepers in MLS to play every minute of every regular season match and anchored the league’s second-best defense which conceded fewer than a goal per game.

He finished third in voting for the MLS Defender of the Year award and was named an MLS Best XI selection. Mensah then played every minute of all four postseason matches en route to the team’s first MLS Cup championship since 2008.

Mensah joined Columbus in January 2017 after a short stint at Russian club, Anzhi Makhachkala.

He quickly became a fan-favorite at Lower.com Field, where he served as the Crew’s captain for the past two seasons.

In his four years at Columbus, Mensah made 159 appearances. He also played a key role in the team’s 2020 MLS Cup triumph.
