Sarri plays down Pedro's injury

Published on: 21 September 2018

Maurizio Sarri does not think the shoulder injury Pedro sustained during Chelsea's Europa League victory against Greek side PAOK is serious.

The Spaniard had to leave the pitch in the closing stages of the Blues' 1-0 victory on Thursday after being involved in an accidental collision with PAOK goalkeeper Alexandros Paschalakis.

The Spaniard will need to be assessed to determine the severity of the injury but Sarri was upbeat about the problem after the match.

The former Napoli coach said: "I don't know exactly the situation. I have only talked to the doctor for a few seconds and he said probably it is not a very serious injury."

Willian scored the only goal of the match as Chelsea made a winning start to their Europa League campaign after beginning their Premier League season with five victories in a row.

Alvaro Morata started against PAOK after losing his place to Olivier Giroud for Chelsea's recent games, but the Spanish striker once again failed to impress.

Sarri said of Morata's travails: "Alvaro has to gain confidence with one, two, three goals. I am not able to give him confidence. In this match, he had three or four opportunities.

"He was unlucky. I hope for him in the future I can help him. But the confidence can come with goals. For the first time in this season, he was ready in the box. He was on the ball and was active."

Chelsea, 5/1 to win the Europa League outright this season, are 4/7 to beat West Ham United in Sunday's London derby and 8/1 to triumph 2-0.
