Schalke hope Saturday's 4-4 comeback draw at rivals Borussia Dortmund could help to convince midfielder Leon Goretzka to stay with the club beyond next summer.
Goretzka, returning from injury, came off the bench against Dortmund for United States international Weston McKennie after 34 minutes at the Westfalenstadion.
At that time, Schalke were trailing 4-0, but by full-time the score line was 4-4 after one of the biggest comebacks in Bundesliga history.
Schalke CEO Christian Heidel hopes that the result could play a crucial role as the Germany international weighs up his options for the future.
Leon Goretzka has been linked with a move away from Schalke.
"It was something special for Leon to experience such a derby," Heidel told Bild. "It was always important to Leon that he can see a development here at Schalke, also in the sporting department. It's here now."
Goretzka is under contract at Schalke until June 2018 and has been linked with several European clubs, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus.
Bild reported on Tuesday that Schalke have made the midfielder, who came through the ranks at neighbours Bochum, one last contract offer and are willing to pay him an annual salary of €12 million including bonuses. The newspaper added that the new contract offer also included a release clause in the region of €50m.
