The Lega Serie A have rejected bids by Sky and Mediaset for the broadcast rights to Italian football for the 2018-2021 cycle after neither were able to match their expectations.

A statement published on the Lega Serie A website on Friday confirmed that private negotiations held with both broadcasters, who currently hold the rights for satellite and digital terrestrial until the end of the current season, have concluded without an agreement being reached.

"With this procedure now over, none of the [broadcast] packages have been assigned," concluded the statement.

The Lega Serie A had set a target of €1 billion and 50 million for the next three-year cycle, yet only a combined €830 million is reported to have been put on the table by the two leading broadcasters.

That reported offer is €113 million less than for the current three-year cycle, which concludes in June.

Negotiations with Spanish intermediary Mediapro, which is reportedly willing to pay €960 for the entire rights, are now expected to take place.
