Sheffield Wednesday forward Fernando Forestieri has issued a statement of apology to manager, chairman and fans of the club after refusing to travel with the squad to face Norwich City last weekend.

According toSky Sports, the 26-year-old had to also be convinced to take the field against Aston Villa in their season opener, to which he scored the winning goal, which was initially sparked by rumours of transfer interest from both Derby County and Newcastle United, however the Owls' chairman has insisted that none of his players are for sale this summer.

"Following the events of last weekend, I would now like to make my position 100% clear to hopefully allow a line to be drawn beneath this situation."

"I accept my actions were unprofessional and unacceptable and to that end, I apologised sincerely to my team mates, the head coach and all the coaching staff first thing on Monday morning.I also apologised to our fantastic supporters, who have been so kind to me since I arrived at Sheffield Wednesday."

"I would now like to also apologise to our chairman. I was wrong and did not show him the respect he deserves. He has shown full support throughout the last few days, for which I offer my genuine gratitude."

"I can only repeat that never once did I even consider leaving Sheffield Wednesday, and I am sorry if anyone ever thought that was the case."

"My heart is with Sheffield Wednesday and I now wish to put these events behind me, concentrate completely on my football and help this wonderful club move towards the success we all desire."
