Simba win league title with six games to spare

Simba SC have clinched the Tanzanian Premier League title with six matches to spare after Sunday’s barren draw away to Tanzania Prisons FC in Mbeya gave them an unassailable 19-point lead over second-placed Young Africans.

The 2019-20 crown is Simba’s three in a row and their 21st in history and it hands them another chance of representing the East African country in next season’s Total CAF Champions League.

The Wekundu wa Msimbazi sit at the apex of the standings with 79 points after winning 25 of their 32 matches so far, only losing thrice. Second-placed Young Africans, fondly referred to as Yanga are on 60 points.

Since the restart of the Tanzanian top tier on June 14 after a three-month stoppage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Simba have yet to a lose a game, winning two and drawing two to pull away further from the chasing pack.

The Dar es Salaam based side will now switch their attention to the Tanzanian FA Cup on Wednesday where they faced Azam FC in the semis.

“It has been a very tough season but we fought well as a team to clinch the crown. I am pleased to win the title in my first season here and hopefully we win more. This is a motivation for us ahead of the Wednesday game because we are chasing for a domestic double,” said Kenyan midfielder Francis Kahata who is now winning a league title for the fourth time, having won three in a row with Gor Mahia before crossing the border.
