Some Ghana players think they are better because they play in Europe – South African coach

South African tactician, Manqoba Mngqithi has criticised some of the Europe-based players in the Ghana squad for refusing to work hard for the team.

This is after watching Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde on Sunday night at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Analysing the defeat, Manqoba Mngqithi who is the coach of Mamelodi Sundowns said Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori is not to be blamed alone.

According to him, not only is the defending of Ghana bad but some players refuse to work hard for the team because they feel they play in Europe and are better than others.

"That's why we need to understand that playing in Europe doesn't mean you better than the others, Ghana has players that are playing in top leagues in Europe but can't deal with situations like this.

"You see a Ghana player walking instead of running and come to defend. You can't look at Ofori only. There are some players who also think they are at a better level because they playing in Europe, so they won't work hard. Then why don't you stay at home and let those who are hungry to play,” Coach Manqoba Mngqithi stressed.

Ghana in the next game of the 2023 AFCON will play against Egypt on Thursday, January 18.
