South Africa receive heroes' welcome on AWCON return

Banyana Banyana of South Africa received a heroes' welcome after finishing as runners-up at the just ended 2018 Africa Women's Cup of Nations (AWCON).

Coach Desiree Ellis and her charges also qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time ever.

South Africa returned to Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday after having an impressive tournament.

In emotional scenes, Banyana were greeted by a jam-packed OR Tambo International filled with adoring fans after clinching the silver medal. Banyana suffered a narrow defeat to eventual winners, Nigeria 4-3 on penalties at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

South Africa comfortably defeated Mali 2-0 in the semi-final to book their ticket to France  - with Ellis becoming the first coach to lead Banyana to the global showpiece which will be staged in France next year.

The former captain also holds the record of winning the COSAFA Women's Championship as both player and coach.
