Southampton coach reveals why he played Mohammed Salisu at left back

Saints coach Ralph Hasenhuttl has revealed that he had no choice but to start Mohammed Salisu at left-back against Leicester City.

Saints seemed to line up in the identical five-at-the-back formation that they used against Liverpool in midweek for the visit to King Power Stadium.

However, as the last day of the 2021/22 Premier League season approached, it became clear that the Salisu was in a different position.

“I think the guys did okay in the first half, from the pressing way and the way we played was absolutely okay and in the end, still issues with some defending moments where we are not good enough,” he said.

“We tried. We have to take a lot of risks then, when you’re two down then you open everything and go for the equaliser and it’s normal that you get situations like we conceded the third goal,"

“Sali is too far inside, he’s a centre-back, we have no other options at the moment at the full-back position,"

“For the first time in this way, he did okay, but we know we have problems in this position at the moment,” he concluded.

Mohammed Salisu joined the Saints on 12 August 2020 for a fee worth £10.9 million. The defender signed a four-year deal with the Premier League club. This season Mohammed Salisu played 34 games in the Premier League.
