Saints now sit in ninth position on the Premier League table.

Ward-Prowse's curling free-kick played a significant part in Steven Davis' opening goal on seven minutes but Southampton struggled to penetrate the home defence thereafter.

“I work hard to improve on my set pieces so I was pleased to be given that responsibility today. Unfortunately it didn't go in for me but Davo did brilliantly to score on the rebound.

“We dropped off once we got in front. We did well in parts but overall but we're disappointed that we're not leaving with all three points. On balance, we didn't do enough to win the game so a draw is a fair result."
