Southampton Set to Disappoint Host of Clubs by Rebuffing January Offers for Coveted Defender

Southampton are set to disappoint a host of Premier League clubs pursuing coveted Dutch defender Virgil van Dijkin the January transfer window by rejecting any offers they may receive for the player, according to theTelegraph.

Manchester United and Chelsea have been touted as potential destinations for Van Dijk in 2017, though the likes of Manchester City, Everton and Liverpool are reported to be the most keen on bringing the former Celtic man in.

Saints have however opted to rebuff all offers until next summer at least, as they're looking to capitalise on the player's best form before selling him at a premium. Additionally, the player himself is believed to be happy on the south coast and not yet looking to make the move to a bigger club.

At current market price, it's reported that Southampton could rake in up to £40m for the 25-year-old, and a continuation of his great performances could mean that value raises even higher by the time the season ends.

Manchester United's interest is believed to have cooled given they're closing in on a £38m transfer for Benfica's Swedish defender Victor Lindelof, while Chelsea are soon set to welcome Kurt Zouma back into their first team mix after a serious injury.

Both Liverpool and City have shipped goals in the Premier League this season and see their defences as primary areas to strengthen, but it seems they both may have to wait if they're still keen on landing Van Dijk at some point in the future.

Southampton are however set to accept a suitable offer for club skipper Jose Fonte in the new year, should they receive one.
