Spalletti: Chievo took advantage of distracted Inter

Published on: 22 December 2018

Inter coach Luciano Spalletti admits the Nerazzurri fell asleep in injury time, as they allowed Chievo to secure a late 1-1 draw.

It looked as though Ivan Perisic’s first half strike would be enough to secure three points for the away team, but Sergio Pellissier lobbed home an injury-time equalizer to give the Flying Donkeys an unlikely point.

Spalletti admitted his side switched off with the game seemingly wrapped up, and he also hit out at their inability to kill off a match that seemed over.

“The same situation played out like the last few times we played Chievo,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “They know how to use their strikers when the play breaks down, and we weren’t ready for that.

“We were left watching on the flick on and they took advantage of that. It’s clear we have to work on these things, as we had several chances to close out the match and we didn’t.

“Then this space opened up for Pellissier at the end and he did well to make the most of it.”

With the January transfer window on the horizon, Spalletti made it clear he wasn’t asking for any additions despite Inter’s recent struggles.

“Absolutely not,” he stated. “We have a great team.

“We won’t improve with the leftovers of others.”
