Spalletti: Inter can build on victory over Tottenham

Despite going behind, Inter boss Luciano Spalletti was happy with his side’s reaction and feels the 2-1 win over Tottenham can propel the Nerazzurri forward.

Christian Eriksen put Spurs ahead 53 minutes in, but first Mauro Icardi brought Inter level on 85 minutes then Matias Vecino sent the Nerazzurri fans wild with an injury time winner.

“Icardi scored like that on purpose,” Spalletti told the press. “He likes to get out of the scrums in order to be more lethal.

“It’s his choice, he does it a lot. He knows things like this and I hope he does it even more.

“We weren’t at the level, in a couple of areas, which we had prepared to be. Some phases of the game could have been managed better.

“I want to congratulate Skriniar, as he had a tough game against two fast players in a position he isn’t best in.

“Perisic wasn’t 100 percent, and Icardi wasn’t fully fit. Because of these things I definitely think it was a great victory against a strong team, that play wonderful football thanks to Pochettino. Inter should get the right amount of merit.

“We always wanted to win the game, and when we got level, we wanted it even more. We kept a good balance and tried to go to the very end.

“Icardi scored a great goal, and that’s what he has to do. Until that point he wasn’t involved much, then on occasion he does that little bit extra and different.”

Despite conceding, Spalletti was happy with the mental reason of the players and wants the fan to continue supporting as they did.

“The mental reaction was highlighted after the team conceded,” Spalletti went on. “That is what the public want.

“It is the right way to make certain improvements. If the fans understand that they have to always support the team, they can make the difference in Serie A as well.

“A victory like this, after having come from behind, gives us a lot of enthusiasm and allows us to believe more about the future.

“The players have found a good balance on the pitch, apart from a few minutes after we went behind. So that is a good sign.”
