Former Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Kingson has disclosed that Stephen Appiah never wanted to take the penalty against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Appiah was seen picking up the ball in anticipation to take the spot kick after Luis Suarez had handed the ball with hand in the dying embers of the game.

Gyan was eventually the kicker as his strike came off the cross bar and dash Ghana's chances of making an historic semi final berth as the Black Stars lost the ensuing penalty shootout.

Many Ghanaians believed the former Sunderland striker should have left the kick for Appiah who had a great track record in taking such important kicks.

But Richard Kingson has come out to set the record straight on the penalty incident.

"Asamoah Gyan was our first penalty taker. When there is a penalty everyone knew Gyan will take it. So against Uruguay when the penalty was awarded Stephen Appiah took the ball immediately to hand it over to Gyan," Kingson told Fox FM.

"Sometimes some people say Appiah wanted to take it but Gyan stopped him. That was never true. Gyan was always going to have it "
