Stoke boss Hughes expects Shaqiri to star after Switzerland qualification

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has stated that he expects Xherdan Shaqiri to translate his international form at club level.

Shaqiri played a crucial role in helping Switzerland earn qualification into the 2018 FIFA World Cup over the past week as they defeated Northern Ireland and following the fine achievement, the winger has now been backed by Hughes to star for the Potters as well.

"In Shaq's case," said Hughes, "His form and his general level in training has been superb since he came back at the beginning of the season.

"Obviously he's now got the reward of a World Cup at the end of the season. He can now park that for a couple of months and concentrate on being a success with us.

"Clearly, the top teams have got more game changers, guys sprinkled with a little bit of star dust. But if you look through the league, almost every team has got one or two players who can push results towards you, and clearly Shaq is one of a number we feel we've got."
