Stoke City vs Leicester City Preview: History, Team News, Key Battles and More

Published on: 16 December 2016

Stoke City have been somewhat disappointing this season after beginning the year with what looked like a strong side on paper.

Leicester haven't won an away game since April and, even though an away trip to Stoke isn't the tough task it used to be, they'll need to be pretty strong to beat a Stoke side who look good on their day.

History

Stoke City were dismantled last time out with Danny Drinkwater, Leonardo Ulloa and Jamie Vardy providing the goals in a comfortable 3-0 home win. Leicester are a very different team this year, though, although a similar-looking side did return against ManchesterCity; something that Mark Hughes will be wary of.

In their previous nine meetings in all competitions, Leicester have won three, Stoke have won three and the other three have been draws, making this one tough to call if history is anything to go by.

Team News

Marko Arnautovic begins a three-game ban after being sent off early in the game against Bournemouth on Wednesday.

Marc Muniesa and Erik Pieters have both picked up knocks but the pair look likely to shake them off in time to be considered fit for this game. Despite returning to play for the under-23's, this game comes too soon for Ibrahim Afellay who won't be considered.

Leicester are still without Danny Drinkwater as he deals with a knee injury but look likely to welcome Kasper Schmeichel and Danny Simpson to the side.

Possible Stoke City lineup: Grant; Johnson, Martins Indi, Shawcross, Pieters; Whelan, Adam; Shaqiri, Allen, Diouf; Walters.

Possible Leicester City lineup: Schmeichel; Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs; Mahrez, King, Amartey, Albrighton; Slimani, Vardy.

Key Battles

Jamie Vardy vsRyan Shawcross and Bruno Martins Indi

Manchester City were unable to handle Vardy last weekend as he powered through their defenceto score his first hat-trick since playing for Fleetwood Town in 2012.

The strikerwas quiet in their loss to Bournemouth but may feel that he has a better chance of bullying a Stoke defence that will be less confident than an in-form Bournemouth side.

Joe Allen v Daniel Amartey

Allen is having his most productive Premier League season so far with four goals and three assists to his name.

The Welshman has put in some classy performances this year, earning himself a place in UEFA's 40-man team of the year shortlist, and as the most defensive of a midfield duo, Amartey needs to keep the midfielder quiet.

Prediction

With the loss of key man, Arnautovic, Stoke lack a little going forward and face a Leicester side who can score a lotgoals on their day - just as Pep Guardiola. With their terrible away record, though, a thumping win by a very inconsistentLeicester side looks unlikely.
