England manager Gareth Southgate is experiencing a striker shortage.

The Three Lions boss will name his squad for the upcoming friendly with Germany and World Cup qualifiers with Lithuania on Thursday.

But he will not be able to call on key attackers Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney or Daniel Sturridge.

Kane injured his ankle in FA Cup action for Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend and is expected to be sidelined for some weeks, while Manchester United captain Rooney has a knee issue after copping a kick at training recently.

Liverpool's Sturridge has not played at club level since early February because of illness and injury.

Likely replacements Andy Carroll has only returned to action with West Ham United recently after almost a month out, while Danny Welbeck has been ill of late and has played very little football for Arsenal since coming back from a knee injury.

It leaves Sunderland veteran Jermain Defoe, who has scored 14 Premier League goals this term, but last played for his country in 2013.

Leicester City's Jamie Vardy and United youngster Marcus Rashford as England's only recognised strikers for the March 22 fixture in Dortmund and the March qualifier at Wembley.
