Sunderland and Jack Rodwell reach agreement to cancel contract

Sunderland and Jack Rodwell have reached an agreement to cancel the midfielder's contract, with the 27-year-old now expected to move to a club in MLS.

Rodwell moved to the Stadium of Light in the summer of 2014 and had been earning £73,000 per week - a figure that was reduced to £44,000 after Sunderland's relegation to League One.

He had not played for the club since September, mainly due to injuries.

However, the feeling at Sunderland was that Rodwell could have done more to make himself available for the side.

Rodwell asked to leave Sunderland in January and the club offered to rip up his contract, but Rodwell was reluctant to walk away from such a lucrative deal with no pay-off.

He was expected to spend time training with Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem that same month, but that deal also fell through.

Rodwell - who had one year remaining on his deal - leaves Sunderland having won only one match that he started in four years at the club.
