Swansea 3-0 Sunderland: Llorente Double Helps Swans Clamber Out of Relegation Zone

Published on: 09 December 2016

Fernando Llorente scored twice to give Swansea a much needed win over Sunderland on a rain sodden pitch at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea were good value for their win which saw them clamber above Sunderland.

The game started at a tepid and slow pace as both sides looked to string a few passes together, but both were thwarted by a sodden pitch in South Wales.

It took until the 20th minute of the game for Sunderland to get going when Jermain Defoe pinged a shot just over the crossbar. This was then followed by the best chance of the match so far when Swansea's Alfie Mawson headed over Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick.

Another set-piece saw Swansea come close again when Jordi Amat headed over as the hosts attempted to turn the screw towards the end of the first half.

The first half ended with no shots on target which showed the lack of quality during the half, but this changed quickly after half-time.

Jason Denayer was adjudged to have handled Wayne Routledge's cross which subsequently saw Sigurdsson smash home the penalty.

Swansea's tails were up and they got another when Fernando Llorente swept home Sigurdsson's corner from six yards to double Swansea's advantage. Jordi Amat nearly scored a third only to be denied by a strong Jordan Pickford save.

Swansea then eventually did get a third goal that their good play had rewarded when wonderful work from Jefferson Montero down the left hand side enabled him to clip a ball into the area where Llorente scored his second with his head.

By this point, Sunderland had given up on the game but nearly got a consolation goal when Fabianski tipped a header onto the bar.

The game closed out with Swansea getting a vital result after conceding five at White Hart Lane, while Sunderland's recent revival was halted in a game in which they failed to grasp the initiative.

Both sides now look towards midweek Premier League games with Swansea heading to the Hawthorns and the Black Cats hosting Chelsea.
