The Little Engine That Could: Lallana Breaks Record for Distance Covered in a Game This Season

Published on: 11 December 2016

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is fast shedding the reputation of a player only able to last 60 minutes of a game the season after running himself into the ground yet again for the Reds during Sunday's 2-2 home draw with West Ham.

Prior to the game on Merseyside, Lallana held the Premier League record for distance covered in a single game this season. But the England international has now taken that up a level to better his own mark.

He ran 13.7km against West Ham, playing the full 90 minutes. It was his first start since overcoming a recent injury sustained while in action for England last month and his fourth full game since a run of exceptional individual form in late August and early September.

Despite his image as a delicate player, Lallana has been setting the standards at Liverpool ever since manager Jurgen Klopp arrived at the club last October.

"Apparently when Klopp went in, I think the first question he asked the staff was, 'Who's the fittest player at the club?" Sunderland striker Jermain commented recently.

"I think they said Lallana. What he wanted to do was to get everyone at that level."
