The reason to increase GPL prize money has nothing to do with elections - Henry Asante Twum

Henry Asante Twum, the spokesman for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has underscored that the decision to augment the GPL prize money carries motivations entirely detached from the imminent 2023 GFA elections.

Some fans and football pundits after the announcement of an increase in prize money said that the Ghana Football Association made this move as part of Kurt Okraku's campaign for re-election.

Henry Asante Twum rubbished these claims and stated that since the Kurt Okraku led FA entered into office the prize money has increased after every season and it might go up again next season.

Ghana FA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku at the launch of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League in Koforidua announced that the winner of the league will take home an amount of Five Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHc 500,000).

"The reason to increase the prize money has nothing to do with the elections you will recall that aside 2019/20 league that we played and didn't finish because of Covid from there on every year we increase the money the prize money for the league winner," he told Peace FM as monitored by Footballghana.com

"2020/21 season that Hearts of Oak won the money they took 200,000 cedis, 2021/22 and 2022/23 the money the teams took 250,000 cedis.

"So every year there is progress we move from one step to the other from 200,000 we brought it to 250,000 2021/22 recently that we finished we brought it from 250,000 to 300,000. That is the money Medeama received so it is progressive,"
