There has always been racism between players on the pitch - Ghana midfielder Alfred Duncan

Ghanaian midfielder, Alfred Duncan claims the problem of racism in football is not just among the fans, but even between players on the pitch.

The issue of racist abuse during football matches is sadly more common than ever, with clubs fined for offensive chants from their supporters.

However, speaking to the official Fiorentina channel, Duncan insists there is an even more horrifying situation going on.

“There has always been racism between players on the pitch, but you don’t hear it because unfortunately, we don’t wear microphones,” said the midfielder.

“The way I see it, it’s not just saying insulting words that make me understand if someone is really racist, it’s the way they say it and when they say it. When certain things happen between players, it is annoying, but over the years I learned not to react.

“Those who are in the stands paid to see me play and I again learned not to react, because it’s ultimately pointless. The less we talk about them, the better.”

Duncan, born in Accra has however spent his entire career in the Italian Serie A with Inter, Livorno, Sampdoria, Sassuolo, Cagliari and Fiorentina.

“I have been playing for many years and I keep saying the same things,” added the 30-year-old.

“Playing away games, when the bus arrives at the stadium, you see the opposition supporters, even with children in their arms, making certain gestures. The kids just learn to copy their parents, grow up and do the same things with their kids. Until there is more education around these matters, it will continue like this.”

Meanwhile, Duncan was in action as the La Viola suffered a 1-0 defeat against AC Milan over the weekend.

He will be hoping to steer Fiorentina to a win when they face KRC Genk in the Europa League on Thursday.
