This was not the news we were expecting - Ex-Black Stars skipper Stephen Appiah consoles the family of Christian Atsu

Former Black Stars skipper, Stephen Appiah has been left saddened by the passing away of Christian Atsu.

The 31-year-old was found dead on Saturday after being trapped in a rubble following an earthquake that struck Trueky and Syria last week.

Following the demise of the Hatayspor winger, the football world has been brought to a standstill.

In a social media post, Appiah sends condolences to the family of the former Chelsea winger.

"This was not the news we were expecting bro but God knows best," the former Juventus midfielder who also played in Turkey for Fenerbahçe SK tweeted.

"My condolences to the widow and family of our brother Christian Atsu.

"May he find rest. We will miss you. #RIPChristianAtsu."

Atsu played 65 times for Ghana, scoring nine goals and was a member of the Black Stars squad that featured at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The winger joined Hatayspor for free on September 6, 2022, after leaving the Saudi Arabian team Al-Raed. He scored 1 goal in 4 matches he took part in for Hatayspor.

In his career, the Ghanaian football player also played for teams such as Feyenoord Ghana, Porto U19, Porto, Chelsea, Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga, Newcastle United and Al-Raed.

Atsu spent eight years signed to Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Bournemouth, Everton and Newcastle.

He was signed by Chelsea in 2013 before being sent on loan to Dutch club Vitesse.
