On Monday evening, after 727 days, the new winners of football's most prized accolades were announced.

For the record seventh time, Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d'Or for the seventh time.

In 2021, the 34-year-old made 56 appearances for Argentina, scoring 41 goals and providing 17 assists while also winning the Copa América.
The PSG forward beat out Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski (second) and Chelsea's Jorginho for the award (third).

Alexia Putellas, meanwhile, won the Ballon d'Or Féminin after dominating Barcelona's midfield during their treble-winning season last year.

In 2021, the 27-year-old midfielder made 57 appearances for club and country, scoring 39 goals.

Jennifer Hermoso of Barcelona and Sam Kerr of Chelsea finished second and third, respectively.

There were also four additional trophies up for grabs.

Pedri (Barcelona) won the Kopa Trophy for best player under 21, and Gianluigi Donnarumma (Paris Saint-Germain) won the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper.

Robert Lewandowski took up the brand new Striker of the Year title, while Chelsea was named Club of the Year.
