'Under Armour' Reportedly in Talks to Become Real Madrid's New Kit Manufacturer in £127m Deal

Published on: 14 February 2017

Real Madrid have allegedly opened discussions with Under Armour about the possibility of the American sportswear giant manufacturing their kits.

Marca claims that Los Blancos have held tentative talks with the US franchise, but the same report goes on to state that negotiations over extending their current deal with Adidas have also taken place.

Adidas are keen to tie Real down to an improved deal that would see the reigning Champions League winners net a mammoth 140m euros (£118.5m) a year from the sponsorship deal, with the contract said to last for up to 10 years.

Those rumours now appear to have been replaced by conjecture linking Under Armour with becoming Real's new kit producer as the American corporation attempts to really break into the market on the continent with a European giant.

Representatives within the Real camp have reportedly told Under Armour that they would renege on their 15-year partnership with Adidas if the US company was willing to offer them a staggering 150m euros (£127m) a year for the right to make their kits and training gear, but it remains to be seen whether Under Armour would be willing to accept those terms or attempt to negotiate with Real further.

Under Armour was founded in 1996 and has seen its standing in the world of sports clothing and accessories increase exponentially in recent years.

The company currently produces kits for Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Southampton, while football stars such as Arsenal's Granit Xhaka, Lille's Memphis Depay and Hull City's Michael Dawson are players currently sponsored by Under Armour.

Other clubs under the Under Armour brand include German outfit St. Pauli, Scottish side Airdrieonians, Dutch team AZ Alkmaar and Brazilian side Sao Paulo.

Providing Real Madrid and Under Armour shake hands on a prospective deal, they would become the highest paid club in the world where kit deals are concerned. Manchester United currently lead the way with their £80m-a-year deal with Adias, while Barcelona sit second thanks to their £72m-a-year kit association with Nike.
