Valverde slams Pep over De Jong approach

Published on: 27 January 2019

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has slammed former Blaugrana manager Pep Guardiola for his reported approach to new signing Frenkie De Jong.

Barca have secured the Ajax star's services after months of speculation about his future in the Dutch top flight.

A number of clubs were thought to be interested in landings the Netherlands international, however, it was the La Liga champions who splashed £75m on the 21-year-old.

De Jong revealed to Dutch broadcaster NOS that he did speak to Guardiola over a move to Manchester City and the comments have not gone down well in Catalonia.

"You can't call a player who already has a contract," Valverde said.

"It isn't my code of conduct to call a player who is under contract with another club. If I do it, I won't say it. If the player says it then it is his problem.

"I have nothing to say about it. Everybody has a different way of doing things. This club acts in a certain way. And I have nothing to say about it."

Barca are 9/2 to win the Champions League this season, while City are 7/2 to claim the European crown.
