Veteran Sunderland Striker Is Getting Better With Age & Has the Stat to Prove It

Jerman Defoe may be 34 years of age, but his prowess in front of goal is still something to marvel at.

The veteran striker has traded the bright lights of European football with the Premier League's elite for regular relegation battles with Sunderland in recent seasons, but the forward appears to be getting better as he enters the twilight of his playing career.

Take this stat, for instance: thanks to his brace of goals against Liverpool on Monday, Defoe has plundered 11 league goals already this season.

Why does this feat lend credence to Defoe getting better with age? Well, the England international has only scored 11+ goals at this stage of a season on one other occasion in his career - that other hot streak coming during the 2009/10 campaign during Tottenham's eventual fourth placed league finish.

Such form has even led to West Ham United attempting to re-sign him, with the Hammers' £6m bid on Wednesday being rebuffed by the Black Cats.

Defoe puts his longevity down to hard work and determination - not to mention being a teetotaller - and, for someone who has remained humble and honest throughout his 18-year career, his goalscoring record so far this term couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
