VIDEO: Newcastle United remembers Christian Atsu with vital winner against West Ham

Newcastle United paid tribute to Christian Atsu, a former player who passed away earlier this year, by showing a video of his winning goal in their 3-2 victory against West Ham United at London Stadium in December 2017.

The video was played as a highlight of the game ahead of their meeting on Wednesday night at the same venue.

Christian Atsu, the 31-year-old former winger, died in February 2023 following a devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.

He was laid to rest in March after a state funeral attended by high-profile dignitaries.

In the game, Christian Atsu not only scored the winner, but also set up Newcastle United's second goal for Mo Diame to convert. His compatriot, Andre Ayew, also scored for David Moyes' West Ham and missed a penalty as well.

The result moved Rafael Benitez's side out of the relegation zone after they had slipped from sixth place in October to 18th.

Christian Atsu played for Newcastle United between 2016 and 2021, after joining from Chelsea.
