Aston Villa manager Unai Emery wants his side to top their Europa Conference League group but has said he will rotate his squad in Thursday's match at Zrinjski Mostar.

Villa need a draw in Bosnia-Herzegovina to seal top spot, miss the play-offs and move straight into the last 16.

Emery's side needed a 94th-minute goal to beat Zrinjski 1-0 in October.

"We respect this competition and we respect Zrinjski. Of course, we want to be first in the group," said Emery.

"Our objective is trying to play, improving our team tactically, trying to give some players a real chance to play and being first in the group.

"It is a very good opportunity for someone to try to play and get minutes, get confidence. I want to try to build and create a strong structure in our squad with the players."

Villa, in their first European campaign following a 13-year absence, are top of Group E and guaranteed a top-two finish, while Zrinjski are fourth and unable to qualify.

If Villa lose in Bosnia-Herzegovina, second-placed Legia Warsaw, three points behind Emery's team, could move ahead of them with a home win over Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.

The group winners move straight into the last 16, while the runners-up will have to play a two-legged tie in February against a side that has finished third in the Europa League group stage.
