Watford 3-2 Everton: Okaka Guides Hornets to Victory as Toffees' Miserable League Run Continues

Published on: 09 December 2016

Everton's terrible run of form continued apace on Saturday as Watford came from behind to record a vital 3-2 victory at Vicarage Road.

Walter Mazzarri's men secured only a third ever triumph over the Toffees in their history as a towering header from Sebastien Prodl, either side of Stefano Okaka's first two goals for the club, handed the three points to the hosts despite Romelu Lukaku's brace sandwiched between Watford's three strikes.

The result leaves the Blues with just one win in 10 league games, with Watford climbing above the Merseysiders into seventh in the league standings with the win in Hertfordshire.

It was evident from the off that both sides were lacking confidence, with only teasing crosses from Etienne Capoue and Gerard Deulofeu offering any semblance of half chances for either team.

It was the away outfit who profited first, though, with the first real opportunity in the match. A swept ball over the top from Gareth Barry found Lukaku after the Belgian had been played onside by Miguel Britos and, after allowing the ball to bounce, guided a low right foot effort under the body of Heurelho Gomes.

With that, the Toffees sat back and invited Watford onto them - a move which would backfire on Ronald Koeman's men as the pressure began to mount.

22 “ At the age of just 23, Romelu Lukaku has scored against 22 of the 29 different opponents that he has faced in the PL. Focused.

Okaka fired a tame effort goalwards after a cute one-two with Troy Deeney, Britos glanced a header over the bar from a corner and Adlene Guedioura produced a routine stop from Maarten Stekelenburg as the Hornets began to up the ante.

Their dominance was finally rewarded 10 minutes before the interval. A sweeping counter attack down Everton's left flank was started by Okaka with a sprayed ball out wide to Nordin Amrabat.

The Italy international continued his run into the area, and met Amrabat's delightful low centre with a stupendous, deft backheeled finish after beating a static Ashley Williams at Stekelenburg's near post.

Tails up, Watford pressed for the lead as half-time approached, and Deeney was unlucky to nod wide of the post after being put off at the last second by Seamus Coleman's ill-timed leap to cut out the cross to the back stick.

Prodl sent a header well over the bar from a deep Guedioura free kick as the second 45 began in a similar fashion to the first, but the Austrian was not to be denied only two minutes later.

Jonas Holebas' curling set piece from the left flank was met by the thundering Prodl, and the centre back bulleted a header past Stekelenburg to hand Watford the initiative.

Just four minutes later and the Hornets were in dreamland. Britos' back post header was tipped expertly behind by Stekelenburg but, from the resulting corner, Okaka glanced a near post header past Coleman on the line to give Mazzarri's men a commanding lead.

Substitutes Ross Barkley and Enner Valencia saw efforts deflected wide and sent the wrong side of the upright respectively as, belatedly, Everton pushed for a way back into the match.

Lukaku planted a header past Gomes from substitute Aaron Lennon's dinked cross to set up a frantic finish to proceedings, with half-hearted appeals for a penalty after Britos appeared to climb all over Lukaku in the area, but Watford held on for a rare win over the away outfit.
