Watford Manager Mazzarri Hails Home Support After Vital 3-2 Premier League Victory Over Everton

Published on: 10 December 2016

Walter Mazzarri has praised Watford's home support for helping his players record a 3-2 victory over Everton on Saturday.

The Italian manager claimed that it was the vocal nature of the Vicarage Road faithful that helped the Hornets come from behind to secure only their third victory over the Toffees in their entire history.

Stefano Okaka's first goals for the club, coupled with Sebastien Prodl's header, overturned Romelu Lukaku's 17th minute opener and, despite the Belgian notching a second to step up a nervy finish, the hosts held on to move up to seventh in the Premier League table.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Mazzarri lauded both players and fans for their roles in handing Watford only their second win in the past five matches.

He said: Even though they scored, we showed great character and managed to beat a great team like Everton. It was extremely important to win today because we came from two games we didn't deserve to lose.

I want to thank the fans. They were incredible, and not only for the banner for me at the start of the game but for chanting for us even when we were losing.

Mazzarri also paid particular tribute to the family of Ray Batchelor, the Watford supporter who passed away during the Hornets' 3-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion seven days prior.

He continued: "On top of everyone I dedicate this win to the watford fan who passed away last week - Ray Batchelor & his family."

Speaking about the result itself, Mazzarri revealed his delight at his side's prowess from set pieces after two of Watford's three goals came from dead ball situations.

He added: "I'm very happy. We have worked a lot on it, we managed to do it last week (against West Brom) and now we managed to do it again, so we're very happy about this."

On the performance of Okaka in particular, the former Inter Milan manager said he was happy to see his compatriot take his opportunity with aplomb.

Mazzarri said: "He has had to wait because of an injury, but he has shown how important he is for the team, and if we had had him for longer, we might even have more points than we do at the moment."
