Despite apologising both publicly and to Southgate in the days after the story broke, the 31-year-old has now come out fighting against the press, andaccording to theDaily Mail, suggested that the way in the which he has been portrayed in the media shows a lack of respect to him, and that he should be cut more slack after his achievements in the game for club and country.

Speaking after his side's 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday, Rooney said:

"What's been going on is disgraceful.

"I'm proud to play for my country and I'm proud of my achievements. It's not finished yet. I think what's been going on is disgraceful. It shows a lack of respect and I think enough is enough. That's all I want to say."

Regardless of his actions however, reports from the FA suggest that Rooney will not lose his captaincy over the repercussions of this incident, and will merely be warned over future decisions regarding attending social events following matches.
