We didn’t play our best game against Senegal in the final – Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi

Head Coach for the Desert Foxes of Algeria, Djamel Belmadi has indicated that his side’s 1-0 win over the Teranga Lions of Senegal in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final was not their best game at the tournament.

The two giant of Africa football locked horns at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday night to battle for the enviable trophy that will see them ruling the continent as champions for the next two years.

Algeria emerged as eventual winners on the night after a pulsating encounter even though their performance was not the best as they have shown in their previous matches.

Speaking in a post-match interview after the victory, Coach Djamel Belmadi admitted that his team didn’t play very well but in finals what is important is the win which his players fought very well to achieve.

He shared, “It wasn’t the best game in the technical sense, but in finals, we play for the win and not for the good football. This triumph has a special taste as it’s not played at home, we are at the top of African football. I thank my players for their effort. We doubly prepared for it”.

The win is the second in the history of the Algerians after winning their first trophy way back in 1990 when the tournament was hosted on home soil.
