The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah has indicated that the continued incidents of attacks in the local league are proof that lessons were not learned from the May 9 disaster.

Wednesday marked exactly 22 years since the unfortunate stadium disaster occurred during a match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Speaking to Oyerepa FM in an interview today, Nana Yaw Amonsah bemoaned how acts of hooliganism still persist in the local league.

“Hooliganism still continues unabated in our league. Recently, we saw what happened to Tamale City. It’s been happening at various venues. Each of the 22 years that have passed, we have witnessed hooliganism in our league [and] it means we have not learnt from that incident,” the Asante Kotoko CEO lamented.

The May 9 stadium disaster occurred at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium now called Accra Sports Stadium.

As many as 126 people lost their lives through that disaster.

To date, it is regarded as the worst stadium disaster to have ever taken place in Africa.
