We should cater for fans who got affected by the May 9th Stadium disaster - Former Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Eben Dida

On May 9th, 2001, Ghanaian football was rocked by a tragic event that has since been dubbed the "May 9th Stadium disaster".

During a match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, a stampede occurred in the stadium, resulting in the deaths of over 100 football fans and injuring hundreds more.

This event left an indelible mark on Ghanaian football and has continued to be remembered and discussed in the years since.

Former Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Eben Dida is one of many who believe that the legacy of this tragedy should not be forgotten, and that more should be done to support those who were affected by it.

In particular, he argues that the needs of the fans who were impacted by the disaster should be given more attention, and that efforts should be made to cater to their ongoing physical, emotional, and financial needs.

"Some don't know what happened so if the child sees that someone is looking after him he will also keep that in mind. So it is not good to leave them like that some have going through it and their children have also gone through it we cant look after them," he said on Peace FM as monitored by Footballghana.com

"They have turned to be street boys because of that accident that happened we should talk about it we have to look at that all these things are there they know,"

"We have to look at that and help them when I was playing for Hearts I look at the supporters their behaviour when we closed I was walking among them the way some were crying and in pain. It really worried me so I whenever there is Hearts and Kotoko match that thing is still in my mind,"
