We will never say never on Eddie Nketiah playing for Ghana - Chris Hughton

Ghana coach, Chris Hughton has insisted they have not given up hope on Eddie Nketiah switching his allegiance to Ghana.

The Arsenal forward on Friday night made his debut for the Three Lions in their 1-0 win over Australia at Wembley.

Nketiah was introduced in the second half of the game and he played 17 minutes.

Despite featuring in the game, Nketiah is still eligible to play for the Black Stars but the 24-year-old would not be able to switch if he plays in Tuesday’s Euro 2024 qualifier with Italy.

Born in Lewisham, South London to Ghanaian parents, the former Chelsea academy striker has played up the youth ranks for the Three Lions, becoming a record goalscorer for the Under-21s.

However, Nketiah has been a prime target for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the past years.

“Some players are very definite about what they want. Some are not so sure and some want to see how things develop," the former Brighton manager said as quoted by The Sun.

“I think that’s been the case with Eddie. We would never say never on him switching to Ghana.

“But it’s always down to what the player wants," he added

Chris Hughton, who signed a 21-month deal in March earlier this year also said he is still waiting to see if Callum Hudson-Odoi wants to switch. The Nottingham Forest star, 22, has three England caps but they all came in 2019.

Fifa rules allow players to change countries even if they played in competitive fixtures — so long as they featured in no more than three games, all while under the age of 21.

Three years must also have passed since the last match for the nation from which they wish to switch.
