West Brom Boss Tony Pulis Praises Work Rate of Players After Narrow Defeat at Chelsea

Published on: 11 December 2016

West Brom manager Tony Pulis has praised the hard workof his players after they came close to holding league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Diego Costa's well taken76th minute goal decided the game after a resolute and compact Baggies side had more than held their own.

But, despite claiming that he was pleased with the performance, Pulis expressed his belief that there were areas that could have been improved on.

What we needed to do - and we've got better players than we've shown today - is regain possession, he said, quoted inthe Birmingham Mail.

Just get that pass off to get up the pitch a little bit further to give us an opportunity and a chance to cause them more problems.

On a more positive note, he added:The lads worked really hard.Chelsea play a different formation and shape to most teams in the Premier League.

We had a good week working on it, what we wanted to do and what we didn't want to do.We were well set up, I thought, without possession.Especially first half I thought we caused them some problems on the break.

Pulis was, however, disappointed that experienced defender Gareth McAuley allowed Costa towin the ball so easily before he scored the winner.

The goal was disappointing because Gareth should have dealt with it, the Baggies boss said.

Having said that I've got no qualms with him or any of the other lads because they've been well set up, they've been well organised, and they've worked really hard together as a group.

Gareth is alright. He's made a mistake, we all make mistakes. You move on.He's 37 years of age, and you wouldn't think he was 37.

I'm disappointed for them because they've put so much effort and honest commitment into the game that to get beat by that one mistake. It's a wonderful goal from Costa, but now we move on."
