West Brom Reportedly Win Race to Sign Aston Villa Striker in £7m Deal

West Bromwich Albion appear to have won the race to sign Aston Villa's Rudy Gestede ahead of a host of other clubs in January.

The Baggies have reportedly agreed to pay the Villans £7m to bring the striker to the Hawthorns, in claims made by The Sun, and have seen off strong competition from fellow Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough in the process.

Another report on Tuesday, in the Daily Telegraph, had alleged that the Eagles were the main contenders to prise Gestede away from Villa Park after Connor Wickham suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in the 5-4 defeat to Swansea City in November, while Boro were also keen on landing the 28-year-old as manager Aitor Karanka looks to solve his side's lack of firepower.

It is West Brom, though, who have seemingly secured Gestede's signature as Tony Pulis goes in search of bolstering his own forward line in the Midlands.

The Baggies currently boast Salomon Rondon and Hal-Robson Kanu as their two primary first-team forwards, and Gestede will add further physicality and height to an already imposing centre forward line.

The Benin international has struggled for goals so far this season, with just four netted in 18 appearances for Championship side Villa - the last of which came in November's 3-1 home win over Cardiff City to end a seven-game run without finding the back of the net.

Gestede made a name for himself in English football with Blackburn Rovers following a £200k move from Cardiff. The striker bagged 35 goals in 72 appearances for the Ewood park-based outfit before Villa came calling in July 2015, but Gestede failed to impose himself with the then-Premier League side as they suffered relegation to England's second tier for the first time in over 30 years.

Villa are rumoured to be lining up a move for Brentford's £9m-rated forward Scott Hogan as a replacement for Gestede if he completes his move to West Brom.

The former non-league star has bagged 13 goals in 23 games, and has often spoken of his desire to play Premier League football.
