West Brom vs Manchester United Preview: History, Key Battles, Team News and More

Published on: 16 December 2016

West Brom climbed up to seventh in the Premier League table with victory over Swansea at the Hawthorns on Wednesday, and hope to continue their winning ways when they return there on Saturday. A victory would put them within a point of their opponents, Manchester United.

The Red Devils are hoping to make it three wins on the trot after Wednesday's win at Crystal Palace, and continue to gain ground on the top four. Jose Mourinho will see the game as a golden opportunity to reel them in further, as Manchester City and Arsenal play each other.

Here is all you need to know ahead of Saturday's late kick-off.

Classic Encounter

West Brom 5-5 Manchester United - Premier League (2013)

Was it really going to be any other match?

Sir Alex Ferguson's 1,500th and final game in charge of Manchester United ended in blockbuster style as the newly-crowned Premier League champions threw away 3-0 and 5-2 leads to be held by the Baggies, for whom Romelu Lukaku was still a star.

You can't say that Fergie wasn't given an appropriate send-off!

Key Battles

Salomon Rondon vs Marcos Rojo

Marcos Rojo was excellent against Spurs last Sunday, and performed well against Crystal Palace aside from the vicious lunge on Wilfried Zaha. A continuation of the surprisingly proficient partnership of himself and Phil Jones would do nicely at the Hawthorns.

He comes up against a striker brimming in confidence in the air; Salomon Rondon completed an amazing hat trick of headers against Swansea, and will be itching to get back out there and do it again. Rojo has been suspect in the air before, and still has some proving to do.

Claudio Yacob vs Paul Pogba

Tony Pulis sides are notoriously difficult to break down, and Yacob is one of several Baggies players who delights in starving opposition of chances. Even at Stamford Bridge, West Brom made just one mistake in the whole match to let Chelsea squeeze past them 1-0.

Pogba is one player who might be able to carve the defence open with his variety of passing ranges and world classability to pick out through balls. The Frenchman still needs to step it up, having been little more than average even in United's wins this week.

Team News

Saido Berahino is approaching a West Brom return as he features in their Under 23s match against Wolves, but faces competition from a settledMatt Phillips and Salomon Rondon.

Antonio Valencia is free to return to the United squad after serving his one-match ban against Palace, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan will stay out until Christmas through injury. Eric Bailly damaged his knee against Crystal Palace, and could be set for time on the sidelines once again.

Prediction

Manchester United's turning fortunes will surely fill them with confidence, but that could swiftly change to exasperation if their attack (which still does not look well-oiled for the moment) is kept quiet by the Baggies' stern defending.

Pulis is an expert in frustrating his opposing manager, and none are more likely to get frustrated than Jose Mourinho.

Prediction: West Brom 1-1 Manchester United
