West Brom's James McClean Takes Swipe at Referee Over Gashed Leg Injury (Warning: Graphic Image)

Published on: 24 October 2016

To say that James McClean has courted controversy throughout his career is somewhat of an understatement.

The West Bromwich Albion player became the centre of a media storm in November 2015 after he refused to wear the specially poppy-embroidered football shirts in recognition of Remembrance Sunday - an act that has since led to widespread booing of the winger at matches, as well as threats of violence against him.

McClean has also fallen on the wrong side of the law after he was found guilty of speeding twice in three years, sparked anger for turning his back on the UK national anthem and has been sent off three times in the past three seasons.

So when the 27-year-old took to instagram to show off a nasty gashed leg he picked up in the Baggies' 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, he couldn't help but have a dig at referee Neil Swarbrick:

The caption that accompanied the graphic image read: "If it was vice versa..." as McClean implied that, had he inflicted the injury on one of Liverpool's stars, he may have been more harshly punished for the offence.

McClean may have a point, but maybe passive-aggressively firing a barb Swarbrick's way on social media isn't the way to go about it...
