West Ham Boss Bilic Admits Hull City Were the Better Side in Saturday's Eventual 1-0 Victory

Published on: 17 December 2016

Slaven Bilic has admitted that his West Ham United side were lucky to pick up all three points against Hull City on Saturday.

The Hammers secured a 1-0 victory over the Tigers thanks to Mark Noble's coolly dispatched penalty on 75 minutes, but the result didn't tell the true story of the events that occurred at the London stadium.

Hull dominated for large spells of the encounter and hit the woodwork on three separate occasions before West Ham profited from referee Lee Mason handing them a lifeline in a match they had struggled to gain a foothold in.

Michail Antonio was fouled by Tom Huddlestone as the encounter looked to be heading towards a 0-0 draw, but replays appeared to show the winger go down easily in the box - a move that led to Mason giving the Irons their match winning penalty.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the clash, Bilic stated that his charges needed to be told a thing or two at the half-time interval following a poor first half showing, as well as explaining that Hull could feel hard done by not to leave London with something to show for their efforts.

He said: "In the first half definitely we were fortunate. We were sloppy, they were better.

"We started good, but gave them a couple of chances. We came into that feeling of being scared of playing.

"At half-time I said there are a couple of good things, one that it is still 0-0 and second that it can't be much worse, we can lift up the tempo.

"Second half we were much better, in the last half an hour we were really good. We scored the goal and should have finished the game. It is a massive three points for us. Back-to-back wins, in this stadium, are very good considering the situation we were in."
