The Mirror says the wife of Arshavin faces a possible jail sentence after being told she will stand trial accused of threatening to cut off the fingers of a model filmed cuddling her husband.

Alisa Arshavina, 35, is facing a criminal prosecution in Kazakhstan, where her husband now plays, after the woman lodged a formal complaint.

The player's wife also allegedly threatened to report the 25-year-old for drug possession - a false accusation - and bizarrely claimed to be an agent of the FSB, Vladimir Putin's security service.

According to reports, the alleged incident happened after Arshavina became jealous when her husband, 36, was filmed in an Almaty restaurant touching curvaceous model Olga Semyonova.

Arshavin, meanwhile, has threatened to quit Kazakh club FC Kairat if his wife is convicted while also publicly declaring his love for her in the wake of the scandal.
