Wolfburg's Ricardo Rodriguez Rebuffs PSG Interest as Inter Milan Move Edges Closer

Published on: 06 March 2017

Wolfsburg left-back, Ricardo Rodriguez, hasreportedlyturned down interest from PSG as he prepares for a summer move to Serie A side Inter Milan.

The Swiss international is poised for a move to Inter after the club agreed to trigger his £18.8m release clause at the end of January, despite trying in recent weeks to secure the signing for a lower fee.

Given his defensive and set-piece-taking ability, Rodriguez was at one point one of the hottest prospects in Europe, attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and of course now PSG too.

Due to this, it seems a little odd that Inter would risk missing out on the player by going back on a previous agreement to try to do the deal on the cheap and it iseven stranger that Rodriguez has his heart set on a Serie A side that barely looks likely to achieve qualification for the Europa League this year.

With neither Yuto Nagatomo nor Cristian Ansaldi claiming the left-back spot at Il Nerazzurri outright, it makes sense that Stefano Poli is in the market for a solid left-sided defender capable of commanding a starting role.

PSG, on the other hand, already have Layvin Kurzawa at left-back with veteran Brazilian Maxwell waiting to be called upon if needed. For this reason, perhaps Rodriguez would rather move to Inter where his chances of first-team football are greater.

Regardless of speculation as to why Rodriguez has his mind set on an Inter move, it seems certain that the 24-year-old is on is way away from his current Bundesliga side at the end of the season; and with the side 15th in the league it's easy to see why.

Having now lost more than half of their games this season, Die Wolfe have struggled to cope with losing the likes of Andre Schurrle and Julian Draxler. They were able to earn a point last time out with a 1-1 draw against Mainz, but it's going to take much more than that if they want to get themselves away from a relegation scrap as the season draws to a close.
