Women's World Cup: South Africa 0-1 China; Banyana Banyana Suffer second successive loss at tourney

Published on: 13 June 2019

The Banyana Banyana of South Africa recorded their third successive loss at the 2019 Women’s World Cup on Thursday evening after they were beaten 1-0 by China in their second Group B match.

A difficult match between the two sides that had lost their opening matches respectively only produced one goal, with the Asians getting the better off their African counterparts.

China’s playmaker, Li Ying scored for her side on the 40th minute through a set piece following a concentration lapse on the part of the Banyana Banyana. All efforts by the African side proved futile with the match ending 1-0 in favour of the Asians.

By virtue of that result, the South African’s are in danger of crushing out of their first ever world cup at the Group.

Meanwhile, the format of the tournament means they are not yet eliminated, with four third-placed teams having a chance of qualifying to the knockout phase after all group matches are played.

They will need to defeat Germany on Monday, June 17, 2019, when they lock horns for the final Group B match. A win for the Banyana Banyana will give them a chance to progress into the knockout stage depending on results from elsewhere.
