World Cup 2022: Andre Ayew believes Black Stars have quality players to excel

Black Stars skipper Andre Dede Ayew has backed the team to impress at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, claiming there are enough quality players to help the team.

Only two players out the 26 called-up by coach Otto Addo have played at the global showpiece, thus Andre his brother Jordan.

This will be Andre’s third World Cup, having featured in the 2010 and 2014 editions while Jordan will be making a second appearance after featuring in Brazil.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Portugal game on Thursday, Ayew said, "It’s true my brother and I are the only ones [in the Ghana team] to play in the World Cup but it doesn’t mean anything because we also came to play and it was a first at some point and we were able to do good things on the field,” he said at the press conference ahead of the game against Portugal.

“For me, I believe that the squad we have the quality to really impress and show the World what we are capable of.”

Black Stars, who are the lowest-ranked team at the tournament have been drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Ghana take on Portugal in their first game in Group H on Thursday before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.

Ghana are making a record 4th World Cup appearance in Qatar having previously played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup takes place between November 20 and December 18, 2022.

Only three sides from the continent have ever progressed to the quarter-finals; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Ghana will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year's tournament.

Black Stars exited the group stage at the 2014 edition in Brazil after a slow start to the tournament.
