World Cup 2022: Andre Ayew’s penalty miss had no effect on Black Stars performance – Kudus Mohammed on Uruguay's defeat

Published on: 05 December 2022

In-form Ghana midfielder Kudus Mohammed has refused to blame Andre Ayew for Black Stars exit at the 2022 World Cup following his penalty miss against Uruguay last Friday.

Ayew had the opportunity to give Ghana the advantage in the 17th minute after the Black Stars were award a penalty, but the 32-year-old missed from the spot.

Uruguay defeated Ghana 2-0, courtesy a first half brace from Giorgian Dde Arrasteca.

Many Ghanaians has blamed the Al Sadd star for the Black Stars defeat against the South American giants but the Ajax star thinks otherwise.

‘’I don’t think the penalty miss by Andre Ayew was the key moment in the match, the easiest thing we can do is to blame one person,” Kudus told the media after the game.

‘’In the second half I also got chances that I could have scored, it qualified as a penalty also so we all had chances to have an effect in the game so I don’t really think the penalty had an effect on the whole performance’’.

‘’Andre is a great leader and a great captain. After the penalty miss, he was still in the game and stood up for the team like everyone did but the result went the other way so we learn from it and stay positive’’.

‘’I think what happened in the past we can’t really change it, the focus was to get out of the group, that was the main thing’’ he added.

The Black Stars are expected in Ghana on Monday with preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers set to begin in earnest.

The four-time African champions sit top of Group D with four points from the first two games of the qualifiers.
