World Cup 2022: Denis Odoi believes Ghana is capable of beating Portugal if they play collectively

Published on: 23 November 2022

Ghana defender Denis Odoi has taken inspiration from Saudi Arabia's historic win over Argentina and is confident Black Stars can repeat the same feat if they play as a team against Portugal.

Black Stars, who are the lowest-ranked team at the tournament have been drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Ghana will take on Portugal in their first game at Stadium 974 (Rass Abou Aboud) on Thursday before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.

"Obviously we’ve seen what Saudi Arabia did [against Argentina]," the Club Brugge defender said ahead of Ghana’s opening match.

"It proves that you still have to play every game. It’s not because you’re a small country playing against a bigger country.

"From my experience, if we play as a team and are cohesive as a group, we can do anything."

Ghana are making a record 4th World Cup appearance in Qatar having previously played in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively.

"We’re focused on the game against Portugal. We learned from our game against Brazil with regards to the things that went wrong and we were trying to correct those," he added.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup takes place between November 20 and December 18, 2022.

Only three sides from the continent have ever progressed to the quarter-finals; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Ghana will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year's tournament.

Black Stars exited the group stage at the 2014 edition in Brazil after a slow start to the tournament.

Odoi switched nationality from Belgium to represent Ghana in 2022, and made his debut in a 0-0 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification tie with Nigeria on 25 March 2022.

He has since made four appearances for the Black Stars, however he is yet to find the back of the net.
