World Cup 2022: Former Portugal international Beto speaks highly of Selecao goalkeepers ahead of Ghana clash

Published on: 23 November 2022

Former Portugal shot stopper António Alberto Bastos Pimparel (Beto) believes the Selecao can defend against their opponent at the World Cup considering the quality of goalkeepers at their folds.

Portugal will open their account against Ghana on Thursday before taking Uruguay and South Korea respectively.

The 2016 European champions can boast of top goalkeepers including Rui Patricio and Diogo Costa ahead of their game against Ghana.

Assessing the goalkeeping department, Beto said, "Diogo Costa stopped being a promise some time ago and is already a certainty at FC Porto, in the Portuguese national team and even in Europe. enough quality, marking a beautiful season in the national team. But it seems that we are talking about Rui from the past, when he is still there", the 40-year-old guardian told Lusa.

Diogo Costa is on the rampage, everyone talks about him and I think he's very good, because he's Portuguese. I like national players and the more Portuguese the better. Both he, as well as Rui Patrício and José Sá, have all the conditions to defend the goal in Qatar," he noted.

Meanwhile, Rui Patrício, 34, was the Portuguese goalkeeper at two World Cups (2014 and 2018) and three European Championships (2012, 2016 and 2020).

But he was supplanted in March by Diogo Costa, who had made his debut about five months earlier in a private game with Qatar (3-0), in the Algarve.

The young FC Porto goalkeeper, aged 23, played in his first official matches for the national team in the successes against Turkey (3-1) and North Macedonia (2-0), at Estádio do Dragão, in the European play-off of access to Mundial'2022, which runs from Sunday, in Qatar.
