World Cup 2022: Ghana coach Otto Addo lauds qualities of Andre Ayew ahead of Uruguay clash

Published on: 02 December 2022

Ghana head coach Otto Addo has showered praises on skipper Andre Ayew following his consistent performances for the Black Stars ahead of their final group game against Uruguay at the 2022 World Cup.

Ayew made his debut for Ghana in 2008 and has since earned over 110 caps and scored 24 goals.

At youth level, he starred for and captained the under-20 team that won both the 2009 African Youth Championship and the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

He has played in three FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014 and 2022), as well as seven Africa Cup of Nations (2008, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021), helping them finish runners-up in 2010 and 2015, and was top goalscorer at the latter tournament.

"My relation with him (Andre) is like any other player. Surely, as a captain and also with the vice-captain, he speaks a little bit more, we have a good relation, nothing much to say," Otto Addo said.

"It’s a good relation, we respect each other, he respects me, I respect him. He has done a lot for the country; he is our record national player with the most caps so he is already a legend.

"He is helping me to integrate the new players to also put the system down which we choose. He has a lot of experience and so players like him and Thomas are helping a lot because it’s very, very difficult sometimes to have influence if you are on the sidelines in a big stadium, so we need these players to also help the younger players."

Ghana and Uruguay face off at the Al Janoub Stadium on Friday at 15:00 GMT.

The two sides are in search of a ticket to the knockout stage with Ghana needing a win to automatically seal their spot in the next round of the tournament while the Uruguayans desperately need a win against Ghana to progress to the next round.
